“Jurassic World” is set decades after the first film, and now, Jurassic Park is fully functional albeit with a different name. After a decline in ticket sales, the company creates a new dinosaur and terror ensues.
I really liked the concept a lot because it seems like the natural progression from the first movie. In an interview with the director, he said that since Jurassic Park, it’s been roughly 22 years, so there are people who are 22 years old where dinosaurs always existed so it’s not interesting anymore. The logical conclusion would be to try to make a new dinosaur if the science was available.
To get this out of the way, Chris Pratt is a superstar. His character is from the NAVY and is a trainer for the raptors. A lot of people were worried that it would be really silly, but I’m telling you, it’s not. It makes a lot of sense, and his connections with the raptors were a huge highlight in the movie. I thought Pratt was extremely charming here, and he really carried the movie every time he is on screen. Also, I was worried that Pratt would be really jokey in his role, but it’s dialed down a lot and he’s definitely more badass than goofball.
Jessica Chastain Bryce Dallas Howard’s character started off extremely cliched and I thought it would be annoying, but there was a sudden shift in tone, and through Howard’s performance, I actually cared for the character and she became very likable. They hit a note with the character in one particular scene, and I wish they fleshed out the arc a lot more from that point.Irrfan Khan’s character was by far the most fascinating. The man after John Hammond to actually get the park running. He’s not an evil guy at all, but his desire for bigger and more exciting was contrasted by his sudden urge of morality. I like those two qualities, but it felt a bit rushed.
Everyone else acted really well in their roles, but the characters themselves were a bit thin for my liking. Also, the depth weren’t really explored and no one really had an arc in the movie. The biggest issues I had with the film were some missed opportunities, and another thing that irritated me were the moments they set up in the beginning that weren’t paid off or just ignored completely.
A lot of people are arguing on how this will never be as good as the first one, but it’s such an unfair comparison. The first time we saw the first Jurassic Park, we believed for a moment that it was possible to make dinosaurs. As kids, we never saw anything like that. However, in a world with insane movie spectacles coming out every year, we became like the patrons in “Jurassic World.” We now live in a world where movies are trying to get bigger and more exciting, and we lost our wonder for movies. In this movie, Colin Trevorrow does an excellent job in creating an exciting ride. He gives gentle nods to the original, but still his focus was to carry the story forward, and I do believe he did just that.
Even though I had issues with the writing, I still thought it was extremely enjoyable, and by far, it’s the best sequel to the very first Jurassic Park. As long as you don’t compare it to the first one, it’d be hard not to like this movie. I rate this a 4/5, and I will probably buy this movie to watch again at home.
Jurassic World was awesome! Guaranteed good time =) Very re-watchable too!
