3. Screw Kyle Reese … The movie should have focused on Sarah Connor
Terminator has always been about the Connors. The movie tries to play the story through Kyle Reese, and then also Sarah Connor, but it feels incredibly jumbled. His arc isn’t interesting at all, because he doesn’t really have that much conflict. They tried to make one where he doesn’t like the guardian T-800, referred to as Pops, but then he slowly starts to trust the T-800, but that’s already been done with Sarah Connor in T2. His character works in the first Terminator because he was the supporting role, being the hero to our main character.
The Fix: Instead of Kyle Reese’s narration about Judgement day and the war against Skynet, let’s say we actually start with the alternate timeline of Sarah Connor. When she was 9 years old, a terminator was sent back to kill her, but she’s saved by the guardian terminator. Then we see the guardian training her to be a badass. There will be your moments of action and suspense, but the movie focuses on her struggle of free will v.s. destiny/fate. Therefore, instead of having a regular action movie, we get to see her struggle in trying to change humankind’s fate by living out hers.
Having one twist in a movie can be really epic. Certain movies twist are so iconic that it’ll be remembered forever. However, if you have more than three twists, it weakens the effect, and it also plays like a Saturday Night Live sketch.
Here’s a list of twist that I remember from the movie:
I swear, when I was watching this movie people started to laugh at these twist. It was just getting ridiculous to the point where it’s almost a new drinking game.
The Fix: Just concentrate on one if any. Without so many crazy twists, the script wouldn’t be so filled with expositions, which would drastically change the story.
